Bolshevik wins American Institute of Architects award

October 18, 2017. The Bolshevik business and cultural centre, a masterpiece of 19th century industrial architecture in central Moscow, renovated by O1 Properties, is among winners of the International Design Award of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The award ceremony took place on October 7 in Prague (Czech Republic).

The AIA’s international design prize recognises projects that serve as an example and inspiration to the international community of architects. The awards were made for the fourth time in 2017.

The Bolshevik business and cultural complex is located on Leningradsky Prospect in Moscow and is centred on the buildings of a former confectionery factory, built in the late 19th century. The three main historic buildings of Bolshevik have cultural heritage status. The renovation project was led by the British architects, John McAslan + Partners.

The renovation preserved the exterior and principal internal features of the former factory, while adaptating it for new uses and installing modern utilities. The site now comprises a class-A business centre as well as a landscaped pedestrian area. A number of residential apartments will be completed at the site by the end of 2017. One of the old factory buildings has been converted into a Museum of Russian Impressionism with an outstanding collection of paintings by Russian artists. A remarkable feature of the updated Bolshevik is its newly installed glass atrium, which creates a covered street with retail zone, where tenants and visitors to the complex can relax in comfort regardless of weather conditions.

Bolshevik is open to the general public. It is increasingly popular as a venue for cultural events and as a tourist destination.

Alexander Ostrovsky, the CEO of O1 Properties, commented: "We are pleased that the international professional community appreciates Bolshevik. Together with the architects, we have succeeded in restoring a site of historic importance and creating a place with a special atmosphere, which preserves the memory of previous generations while catering for the needs of today."
